What do I need in my emergency kit?

Items that we require all to clients to have available for use at our direction if needed:

  • Banamine (active ingredient drug name is flunixin) – for colic, fever, pain

  • Thermometer

  • Antihistamines (Benadryl, Claritin, Zyrtec – also known as diphenhydramine, loratadine, cetirizine) – hives and allergic reactions

  • Milk of magnesia (Maalox) and a dose syringe for administering orally - colic

Additional optional emergency items:

  • Dexamethasone – a steroid for severe allergic reactions

  • Oral antibiotics – generally SMZ’s or doxycycline

  • Sedatives – acepromazine or dormosedan – these can be used at our direction for horses that are agitated (fireworks or other unexpected stimuli), caught in a fence/stall bars, choke (esophageal obstruction) etc

  • Broad spectrum antibiotic eye ointment – always safe to use in a swollen eye

  • Antibiotic wound ointment
